OVERVIEW: 

The Planning and Scheduling for Maintenance course will define and review all aspects of the maintenance planner role including defining the job roles and responsibilities involved, the challenges and barriers that one might face, and the necessary communication skills for effective maintenance planning. This course will highlight the benefits of operating in a routine vs. emergency maintenance and will allow participants to realize the benefits of using planning as a strategic tool for moving from a reactive to a proactive environment. Participants will learn SAMI’s proprietary Zone Maintenance work management process including how to assess prioritization, how to plan work orders, how aggressive identification of defects improves reliability, the value of computers, the importance of managing backlog, the ways to support the scheduling process, and how to become skilled at executing the planning function.

The Planning and Scheduling for Maintenance course is designed to give participants a clear understanding of the strategic role that planning and scheduling plays in today’s industrial organizations and the activities that will allow them to achieve maximum operational effectiveness.

COURSE OUTLINE: 

DAY ONE

  • Introductions and opening exercise
  • The planning function
    • History and relevance of the planning function
    • Relationship to other industries
    • Discuss roles and responsibilities of planners with respect to Work Management/Stage 1 AHC
    • Describe and discuss specific barriers to planning
    • Identify specific skill sets and mind sets required to be a planner
    • Discuss the difference between Planning and Scheduling

DAY TWO

  • Identify required computer
  • Develop planner metrics
  • Team exercise
    • Introduce Zone Maintenance
    • Tie in the planning function to Zone Maintenance
    • Using a typical plant, etc.  develop the following schedules:
      • 52 week relationship to other industries
      • T-7
  • Discuss the differences between daily vs weekly scheduling
  • Prepare and conduct a weekly planning meeting and conduct a typical walk-down

DAY THREE

  • Discussion about the value of computers for:
    • Identifying backlog
    • Identifying Preventive Maintenance
    • Closing work
    • Planning work based on past activities
    • Trending data
    • Using data to generate RCA
    • Etc.
  • Develop job descriptions for the ultimate planner
  • Test and debrief
  • Certificate distribution
